Who Would I Be, If You Hadn’t Died?

A couple of days ago, I wrote what is probably the most personal article I’ve written for I wanted to share it with anyone who may come by here as well.

WhoWouldIBe-FeaturedOn Saturday morning, I woke up, saw nothing of major consequence on my news feed and headed out to my rowing class. When I got home, I popped open my news feed and saw the news of yet another famous, inspiring, and influential person dying thanks to cancer. (Thank you and rest in peace, Mr. Cooke. F#$k you, cancer.) As I hopped into the shower, I started thinking about how much cancer has impacted my own life and the geek, man, and father I am thanks to my dad.

Just Create Something and Don’t Give Up

I’ve been a fan of Wil Wheaton and Chris Hardwick for a very long time and the best advice they both give is to just go our there and create whatever you want and not to give up on creating it. That’s why I started this new blog after a very long hiatus of not having one. And it’s why I submitted an application several months ago to become a writer over at

A month ago, I received an email from Ken Denmead, the publisher and head of letting me know that I’d been picked to be one of their new writers. It was exciting and scary all at once. I was seeing professional writers and literal rocket scientists among others being brought on board and felt a little out of my league.

It’s now been a month, and I’ve had 14 articles published on a variety of topics from video game, TV show, and music reviews to talking about science, solar technology and more. Our podcast became part of the GeekDad Podcast Network. And I did my first ever live interview with an actual famous person – Bill Ratner, the voice of Flint from G.I. Joe! As many of you know, I have long wanted to be a voice actor and getting to meet Bill along with several other greats in the industry (Michael Bell, Wally Burr, Neil Ross) was just amazing.

So no matter what you want to do, just do it. Create it and put it out there even if you are its only audience. Create it because you’re compelled to do so.

Our Podcast – Sunday Evening With Captain Owen – Is Live!

This will be a shorter post than normal but I wanted to quickly announce that our podcast is now live!

The podcast is called Sunday Evening With Captain Owen. The goal is to have conversations with Owen every other week so we can record his geek growth. We’ll talk about whatever strikes him. We’ll also read stories and hopefully, eventually, bring in guests (like Sarah and his friends). We are hoping this will be a really fun journey that you’ll want to take with us, listening as he develops and grows.

Please visit the Podcast and subscribe – Sunday Evening With Captain Owen. Also, any feedback or questions or topic ideas are more than welcome.
